Inflorescence (also known as bloom)!
The grove is in full bloom right now. Temperatures are starting to rise, which, unfortunately means we are having to start irrigating again. The tree canopy is buzzing with the sound of bees!

What size is that avocado?
In the avocado industry, avocados are refered to in sizes ranging from #28 to #84. This number indicates how many of that size that will fit into a 25# box, so #28's are the largest and #84 the smallest. It took me a while to get used to that!
Calavo has a handy size chart on their web site here which shows the approximate weights and pulp yields for the different sizes.

Spring is here!
Sunny weather has followed the wet winter bringing out flowers throughout the grove. Here is an edible plant - miner's lettuce - that shows up this time of year:
The yellow clusters of flowers on Gopher's Purge are a nice contrast to the spikes of lavender. Unfortunately,Gopher's Purge doesn't live up to it's name. I often find gopher's mounds right next to it!

Storm Damage
We had strong winds and rains in January! 19 trees blew over as well as the power pole for our well. We were able to harvest the fruit on the fallen trees and get it to Calavo. Look for the Calavo label on your organic avocado.... it might be one from us!
